China
has 65.94 million hectares of wetland, including
27.9 million hectares of natural wetland, In addition
to being the habitats for a wide range of wildlife
and plants, wetland also plays an important role
in mitigating floods, preventing drought, regulating
climate, and controlling pollution.
In 2000, China National Wetlands Conservation
Action Plan was officially published.
A national wetland resource survey was started
in 1997.
Chinese Government
joined the Wetland Convention in 1992.
China has established
304 wetland nature reserves,
covering 49.45 million hectares.
