Constructing Project of Nature Reserves
 
The objectives of the constructing project by 2010 are: to make the number of nature reserves reach 1800,with 220 of those being national. The area of nature reserves reaches 155 million ha,up to 16% of the Chinese territory. Thereby, some typical ecosystems could be effectively conserved and the habitats of endangered species will be improved.

The total area of the Three Rivers Source Nature Reserve is 318,000km2,which is about 3% of total territory, and is the main water supply for the Yellow River, Yangtze River and Lancangjiang(Mekong) River. The importance of the area to ecological balance is significant locally, and even globally.
 
1.Nature Reserves of Typical Forest Ecosystems
Tropical forest ecosystem, Strengthening the construction in 12 nature reserves, expanding of newly cresting 8 national nature reserves of 300,000 ha.
 
Temperate forest ecosystem, The priorities will lie in 27 nature reserves, with newly building 16 nature reserves of 1.2 million ha.
 
Subtropics forest ecosystem, Strengthening the construction of 33 existing nature reserves, creating 34 nature reserves with 2.8 million ha.
