Demonstrating Projects of
Wetland Conservation and Wise Use
|
| |
China is a country in Asia with various
types of wetlands, with the highest quantity and
largest area, comprising 66 million ha, accounting
for 10% of wetlands globally, and is listed as the
fourth in the world.
By implementing 48 demonstrating projects ,the demonstrating
project of wetlands conservation will concentrate
on the areas of Three River Source, Sanjiang Plain,
Songnen Plain and the Source of Nenjiang River,
Lakes in High Plateau, the Valley of Lancangjiang
River, Coastal waterways and the areas distributing
mangrove growth. In addition to setting up 242 wetlands
monitoring stations nationally, the work for 7 current
Ramsar sites in China will be enhanced with the
establishment of a national wetlands monitoring
network via developing scientific research.
China signed the Convention on Wetlands in 1992
with 7 Ramsar sites. In accordance with the Rarmsar
Convention standards, these wetlands will be managed
and conserved by the demonstrating project to improve
scientific research on conservation and monitoring
levels, which also brings benefits to some 2 million
ha of wetlands. Hopefully China will have 23 Ramsar
sites by 2001.
